Why is decking lumber the preferred choice for raised garden beds?
Decking lumber has several outstanding properties as compared with other natural
materials. It is generally impervious to insects and rotting thus has been one
of the major raised garden materials for many years.

What are the advantages of using decking lumber?
It is far more ridged than other materials and will hold its shape for many years of service.

What are the disadvantages of using decking lumber?
None have been brought to our attention.

How are the gardens anchored in place?
By use of two spikes inserted into holes near the mid point of the long
sides of the garden. Once the spikes are driven into the ground the planter
is solidly anchored and cannot shift.

What preparations are advisable prior to installing the soil?
Use a hoe to uproot as much of the sod or weeds as possible. Then apply

Where can the garden soil be purchased?
Any market or store with a garden center should carry what you require.

What mix of soils such as potting soil, top soil, sand and manure are needed?
Since you want the garden to be quite porous you may wish to combine the
soils so that top soil dominates possibly using twice or three
times as much potting soil as the other three.

What form does the soil come in?
The soil usually comes packaged in 30 to 40 pound plastic bags whose volume is
one cubic foot or less.

How is the required amount of soil determined?
One cubic yard of soil is equal to twenty seven 40 pound bags. That is
approximately equivalent to one pickup truck load. That is also the amount
of soil required by large (4 ft. x 8 ft. x 11 inch tall) double
decker gardens. Smaller (4 ft. x 4 ft. x 11 inch tall) double decker
garden will of course require half that amount or 14 bags of soil.
Therefore a single level (4 ft. x 4 ft. x 6 inch tall) kitchen garden will
require about 7 bags of soil.

When should a DOUBLE DECKER garden be selected?
If the soil beneath the garden location is extremely hard packed clay, very rocky,
or possibly pavement or a roof top, the double decker is the best choice.
The extra depth of soil would act as a buffer zone for the vegetable roots. A second
factor for a taller garden would be limitations of ones physical mobility.
