eager to start. What steps must we follow to establish our new
garden.
First step is to decide how large an area we need for the garden
frame and what preparations are necessary to make the spot
ready such as removal of existing grass or weeds. The raised
garden frame itself can be used to map out the area that needs
to be worked. Ideally one would begin the process during the
transition period between the end of winter weather and the
commencement of spring growth. In other words, the grass and
weed removal should start while they are still dormant.
The implement of choice is the hoe as it will afford the user the
cutting, digging action that is essential for the removal of the
roots within the garden area. An iron rake is useful for raking out
the clods of roots that have been unearthed. The 4 x 4 garden is
not overly challenging since it is quite small so the sod removal
can be achieved in a very short period of time.
It is advisable to undercut the sod surrounding the garden frame
so that when it is placed into position it will prevent weeds from
entering the enclosure. Once the raised garden frame is in place,
it is the time to purchase the needed soil that will be used to
fill the garden frame for your vegetable to grow in.

potting soil, cow manure and humus comes in 30 to 40 pound
bags and are approximately equal to as much as one cubic foot.
Since the garden requires 14 to 18 cubic feet of soil.
Forty pounds is quite a load for many of us so in it reassuring to
know that the kind personnel at the store will load the bags into
the back of your vehicle. Once home, it is good if you are able to
back your vehicle right up to the garden spot. If you have
a wheel barrow, so much the better. In any case, rather than
lifting the bags, you should slide them from the vehicle to the
wheelbarrow or directly into the garden if you were able to back
your car up to the edge of the garden.
Prior to spilling the soil into the garden spot, it might be a good
idea to spread newspaper over the area you have just prepared
with the hoe. Saturate the soil with vinegar as this procedure will
arrest the growth of weeds that may still be lurking in the area
you have worked so hard to exterminate. The gallon jugs of
vinegar are very inexpensive so are a worthwhile investment.
