The Cloche (mini greenhouse)
Convert your Raised Garden into a Mini
Greenhouse
A nice addition to your raised garden bed is a Cloche
(the French word for bell) used here to convey the idea
of a cover for a garden for early planting and frost
protection.
Basic materials are PVC piping and pipe straps all
readily available at any hardware store. Sections of
PCV that are screwed to the inside of the raised garden
and serve as anchors for the hoops are 3/4 inch in
diameter and cut into 6 inch lengths.
The hoops are 1/2 inch in diameter and are cut 5 feet
long for a 3.5 foot garden and 7 feet long for a 4 foot
garden width. For the cover, use 1 or 2 mil. clear ground
cloth used by painters. Width of the material should be
at least 15 feet and allow for eight feet length more than
the long side of the garden. You may weigh down the
sides by rolling the loose end of the plastic onto 2 x 4's.
It is possible to install the PVC pipe into gardens that
contain dirt. Wrap the open end of the pipe that is to be
inserted into the soil so that it doesn't clog with soil. You
will need only to install an upper pipe strap as the soil
will hold the bottom end in place. Just scrape away
some of the soil to make access for your screwdriver
and insert the screws at an angle.
